Terminal Tower Cleveland

More amazing photo's from Chris and Chad Saladin!

Took awhile this morning, but found Tiger on a window ledge on the 17th floor. We figure that he fledged yesterday between our visits to the site, but he was in a spot where we couldn't see him from down below. We were able to get up today, but it still took awhile because we couldn't see him even up there until he peeked out from a window ledge (and was partially blocked by scaffolding). Couldn't get up there until 7AM, but saw food brought in at 6:30AM from down below-- SW took the food from Buckeye and went onto the roof, but she was out of view from below (knowing what we know now we think Tiger was up there at the time and was fed then). No other fledges today.

One of the eyases is almost completely brown now. This is a male. Male eyases do not need to grow as much as a female. The weight diffrence is onethird. The name for the male peregrine falcon is tiercel, this is from the German word terzel, which means onethird.
A female eyas has to grow from the 45 gr birthweight to 1100 grams 5 weeks later ! A male to about 800 grams. So the male is much sooner `ready`.
They will still have some downfeathers on their body, like under the wings, on the head and the back.
A male eyas can fledge as soon as 37 days!

De Mortel: 2 juvi's airborne

Things are settling down on the Tower. The juveniles are out of the nestbox and spending their time out of reach of the cams. 2 Of them are airborne. The other 2 still hopflapping.
This afternoon spotters in the field at the tower saw how one of the juvi's jumped from the topring and flew away like he has flown a thousand flights. Gliding, soaring, without nervous flapping! He was joined by his bro/sis, and the 2 flew around the tower!
Our babies have turned into juveniles, into raptors, into real birds. And it goes so very fast.

Don't panic if you look at the nestbox and it is empty...the chicks are quickly gaining their mobility and may have just walked outside of the nestbox, out of view of the camera.
If you look closely at the ledge view you will notice that the nestbox actually sets down in a recessed area of the ledge. The upper part of the ledge is a good 10 inches higher than where the nestbox is and at this young age the chicks cannot make it up that "step" so there is no danger of them getting anywhere close to the actual edge of the ledge where they might fall off.

This will be the names of the 4 eyases:

Boomer
Mistic
Justice
Columb

The Zwolle eyases have transformed into beautiful juveniles. They are on the grate almost all days exercising their wings. It won't be long before the first one will fledge.
