Rome: watch out for those mobile pellegrini

Well what a spectacel today at the Roman nestsite. Both juvi's are expanding their world by exploring the outside world. They where sitting on the edges of the box and one even diappeared behing the webcam. Which moved so he was sitting on top of it. The juvi's for the first time stepped out of the bos and walked on teh ledge. No save place for the parents anymore.l They will start begging for food and run after Aria and Vento. Both juvi's bring a lot of joy to very many people with heir play and adventures.

Rochester: so cute

Nijmegen: 24 days old

Zurich: very active flapping eyases

Brighton: Sussex Heights: 18 days old

De Mortel

Oberhausen: goodbye

An empty nestbox, an empty ledge, they are gone. This morning I saw how they where all outside, 2 of them where sitting in front of the third cam all the way up the chimney. They all 3 fledged. They have been back this morning but after that no more. As I write this in the evening it's an empty nestbox.
This afternoon both parents where meeting in the scrape to renew their bond. Displaying courtship behaviour with headbows and no doubt a lot of eechupping. They once more gave life to 3 new peregrine falcons and fledged them. This renewal of the pairbond is normal behaviour. It may even involve copulations in the upcoming days and weeks. Even when the juvi's are still around.

A wonderful time has come to an end, but for these 3 juvi's life really begins now. We have been enjoying every minute of the past weeks, Starting with the courtship of the parents, the laying of 4 eggs. The hatching of 4 eyases. Sadly the youngest was not strong enough and went back into eternity. We have seen how these 3 eyases have grown into beautiful, awesome and strong and healthy juveniles.

Now they have to learn to fly, get to know the wind and thermals. They will get stronger every day, the muscletraining will result in strong flightmuscles. In a week of 2 their skills will have improved.
They have to learn the stoop and how to strike a prey, and how to pluck it. The parents will teach them this. First they will have to transfer a prey item in the air, one will have to take it over from a parent and fly away with it. The prey item will eventually become a whole bird. They learn the stoop from diving after a dropped prey, and eventually that will be a still alive but wounded prey. Then they have to make their first kill.

In the upcoming weeks these 3 rascals will go to school. The sky above this nestsite will be filled with lots of screaming and laughter when they dive trough walls of air and fly to the sun.

I wish these 3 juvi's who have brought me so much joy a long and very prosper live. Be good dear juveniles and may the Great Spirit light your Paths always.

Ohio Columbus: 4th hatch

On March 29 Scout laid her first egg. It was not until April 7 that she laid her second one. The time between the 2 is exeptional big. So big that we couls speak of 2clutches. She completed the clutch of 4 by April 11 and started incubation.

The time gap between egg one and two was so big that it was very unlikely this egg would be viable.

On May 13 the first egg hatched. Or was it the second one? That was the question. Today the last egg hatched as well. And so the first laid egg did hatch first. And so it was very much alive during al those days of waiting for the second egg in April.

After virtulisation in the oviduct the mitosis proces starts and goes on until the egg is laid. As soon as de temperature drops below 4C celdivision stops. Metabolism drops to the lowest possible level. In order to start the embryonic growth again the egg needs a temperature of 38C.
The parents take care the temp doe snot drop and does not get to high either. Heat is even more dealier that cold.

This first egg of Scout and Orville stayd at this low level for over 11 days. From the moment it has been laid until the start of incubation on April 9.

So we have an unexpected 4th hatch! And that is a very big succes!
