All of a sudden one of the Amsterdam peregrines brought home a green bird. In our country we do not have wild exotic birds. So this was quite a surprise. But some research learned that in Amsterdam there is a growing population of the Rose-ringed parakeet. This non-migrating species is one of few parrot species that have successfully adapted to living in 'disturbed habitats. In the wild, this is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call. They are living in the Vonderpark and are reproducing. The population is about 800 at the moment. Captive parakeets which have excaped ( good for them) feel very much at home in this group of wild parakeets. Amazing really, but great. Our Amsterdam peregrine falcons do feast on a exotic bird instead of the usual pigeon.
