Ohio Columbus: 4th hatch

On March 29 Scout laid her first egg. It was not until April 7 that she laid her second one. The time between the 2 is exeptional big. So big that we couls speak of 2clutches. She completed the clutch of 4 by April 11 and started incubation.

The time gap between egg one and two was so big that it was very unlikely this egg would be viable.

On May 13 the first egg hatched. Or was it the second one? That was the question. Today the last egg hatched as well. And so the first laid egg did hatch first. And so it was very much alive during al those days of waiting for the second egg in April.

After virtulisation in the oviduct the mitosis proces starts and goes on until the egg is laid. As soon as de temperature drops below 4C celdivision stops. Metabolism drops to the lowest possible level. In order to start the embryonic growth again the egg needs a temperature of 38C.
The parents take care the temp doe snot drop and does not get to high either. Heat is even more dealier that cold.

This first egg of Scout and Orville stayd at this low level for over 11 days. From the moment it has been laid until the start of incubation on April 9.

So we have an unexpected 4th hatch! And that is a very big succes!
