This morning at 09:00 de Webcams of De Mortel were switched on for livestreaming. A major achievement of which we are very proud. The feed is hosted by the Dutch Vogelbescherming in Beleef de Lente

www.beleefdelente.nl

Pa and S2 did not disappoint us and showed themselves often in the nestbox. They are very much envolved in courtship. Yesterday I was at the tower in de Mortel and watched them in beautiful courtship flying. Right above my head soaring together. Aamzing. They are mating very often, so I'm sure eggs will be laid shortly.

I want to thank our sponsors for their support: Alticom, InterNL.net, Commanderij College and Vogelbescherming.

De Mortel: Pa preening

What Zenmasters they are, our peregrine falcons. The way they seem to achieve states of deep relaxation and meditation when they perch. They sit for hours and hours just on their perchplace looking into endless depths of wisdom.
Watching a peregrine like that makes you wonder.....

Our Pa was sitting in the entrance of the nestbox for 2 hours, just watching the clouds go by, doing nothing. Then he started preening, a bit of preening oil here, a bit of manicure there and back to the meditative state. Wonderful creatures they are, peregrine falcons.

De Mortel: update

All is well at De Mortel. That's the most important message. 2 Of the 4 juvs have left the Tower, and 2 are still around. Both are able to hunt for themselves and bring their catch back to the Tower. They mantle and defend their prey when S2 wants to join in for a bite: no way Mum.
Pa and S2 are returning to the scrape to renew their pairbond every now and then. The webcams are still transmitting and will be all winter!
You can watch the refresh on

De Mortel: an intruder

Early this morning all of a sudden a strange young falcon appeared in front of the ledge cam. No S2 around apparently because otherwise this would have been totally impossible. The tiercel however was present on the ledge. So this intruding female started ee-chupping to him.
It's kinda funny how our tiercel is such an attractive male that females from 100 of miles around try to bond with him.
But S2, she fought her battle for him last year. She is there to stay.
She must have been out hunting, when this female landed on the ledge.
S2 is very territorial as all falcons are.
Th eintruding female had just one silver legband on her right leg.

De Mortel

De 4 De Mortel juvies are doing fine. They are becoming more and more independant. They leave for long flights together and stay away for some time, They fly with prey and are in full training to be able to bring a heavy prey all the way up to the first ring. Talon tagg, prey transfer and childplay are things that the fledgewatchers can see daily.
One of them is mr Ton Kuipers who makes wonderful pics and videoclips. The photo+s of this post are all courtesy of Ton Kuipers.

De Mortel: what a day!!

This afternoon around lunchtime 2 juveniles landed on the ledge in front of the ledgecam. It was one of the tiercels and the youngest falcon. After I have been to their banding somehow I know who is who.
The tiercel left, but the sweet falcon stayed for over an hour. And my... is she beautiful. With her fluffy featherdress she looks like her wonderful mother S2, but she has the kind eyes of her father Pa.
This little falcongirl showed us her bandnumber. For some reason the WSN did not want us to know the bandnumbers of these 4 or publish it on teh internet.
The youngsters however thought different and have showed us their orange band and number.
So we have the picture complete now!

The eldest is a tiercel with DG
The second is a falcon with AF
The third is a tiercel with DF
The fourth is a falcon with AD
