Zwolle

Terminal Tower

SW and Buckeye taking turns in keeping both eggs warm. They are not incubating yet. They will start when there is one more egg to go. So probably tomorrow evening there will be the third one.

Rochester

It doesn't look very nice in Rochester today. Kaver and Mariah are however in the mood.
Upper image shows Kaver calling to Mariah who is down below, red arrow. But she's not coming. Playing hard to get.....?

Zwolle

A picture of yesterday. Electrabel is busy getting the feed online. But it didn't work quite the way it should be. So de cams where offline today. Electrabel is telling me that they are doing everthing they can to start the feed as soon as possible.

Let me introduce the falconcouple to you:
The female was born on May 12 2005 in Hamm, Germany. She's banded left leg: broad white band K/6. She grew up in a nest of 4 sisters. A real sister act!
The male was born on May 5 2005 in Dortmund, Germany . He's banded left leg: broad white band K/3. He was in the nest with 3 brothers.
On April 23 2007 they where first seen in Zwolle, as a bonded couple. Since 2002 the nest was occupied by a Gyrfalcon who prevented any peregrine falcon from laying eggs in the nestbox.
The egg she has laid is her first egg ever. Females don't lay their first egg before their 4th year.

Cobb Island: 3 eggs!

This lady produced egg nr 3. She looks exhausted,

Indianapolis: 2 eggs!

At 6:07 am on Wednesday, 3/19, one of the adults got off the scrape and lo and behold, we have egg 2! So settle in for the wait for egg 3, cause there will be more. Temperatures have dropped so one of the parents is constantly on the eggs to prevent to much cooling down.

Rome: 13 th day

Video by Nick Moyes

This great video was made by Nick Moyes. It shows the intimate moments of the pergrine couple making new eyases.
Copulations start about 2 weeks before the female starts laying eggs. They will continue untill the egg before last is laid. From that moment on the incubationproces starts. She will refuse the mail when he tries to mate with her. Poor guy. Has to wait quite a while before she feels like it again. As an act of bonding the pair might mate when the juvi's almost fledge.
After the juvi's have left the area, the progesteron and T4 levels start to rise which triggers the molt proces.
The breeding proces is activated and maintained bij testosteron and estradiol. Molt is impossible when those androgens are at their peaklevels. So as soon as these drop and the plasma progesteron is rising molt starts. The reproduction organs shrink to threadsize. So there is no androgen production left. The hots they have now for eachother is gone by then. But the bond stays. Untill death does part them.
